kids on computer

Reset has already talked about the role of Twitter in teaching and how technology has changed not only how teachers teach, but also how students learn. So we were happy to hear about a new Learning in the 21st Century 2011 Trends report, which discussed the increased role online classes play in student education.

Online learning provides both teachers and students opportunities to review and practice concepts. Perhaps no better example is the free learning seminars offered by the Khan Academy. Students still need teachers to facilitate and guide their learning; but online classes can provide useful supplemental education and studying tools.

Amazon.com is refusing to pay its fair share of sales taxes to California.

There were plenty of holiday deals to be found this weekend for San Franciscans shopping for a 4th of July bargain. Those who shopped online for deals probably found something else new to go along with their sale item: sales tax – unless they were shopping on Amazon.com.

On Friday, Governor Brown signed an important online sales tax bill into law that makes companies conducting online sales in California pay state sales taxes. While no one likes the idea of more taxes, those of us who care about more revenue for our struggling state coffers should support this new law and demand that corporations that want our money support it as well.

But Amazon.com, a long-time force in the online sales market, announced they don’t plan to play by the new rules. Read More and Sign the Petition

police department email

SFPD, the 11th largest police department in the United States just got email. Does this seem a little absurd to you?

We think it is – but at least it’s a small step forward.

The San Francisco Police Department has finally granted email addresses to patrol officers. Yet one SFPD Lieutenant - who refused to be named - told us that officers aren’t even allowed to use their new email addresses until more bureaucratic “kinks” are worked out. According to the Examiner, Chief Greg Suhr hopes the system details will be sorted out by next month. Read More

President Obama Twitter Townhall

By: Alyssa Sittig

Here’s a question you may never have thought to ponder: what would you tweet to the President of the United States?

Well, start brainstorming… Today at 11am PST, the White House and President Obama are hosting the first ever Twitter Town Hall on jobs and the economy. Using #AskObama, participants can submit questions via Twitter (so no rambling!) and watch the President’s answers streamed online in real-time. Read More

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee proposes half percent tax rate increase

Californians across the state are going to notice a few extra dollars in their wallet when they go buy a new plasma TV, iPad 2 or DVD player.

That’s because, as of July 1, the state sales tax rate decreased by a full 1%. While this is great news for consumers – many of whom are still struggling to come out of the recession and the slow economic recovery – it’s not the best news for local cities dealing with massive budget deficits.

What the sales tax decrease means for San Francisco?

social media day

We have to give it to New York City. When it comes to Gov 2.0, they are taking charge. Last week, Gotham marked the inaugural Social Media Day, official proclamation and all. The day was the result of collaborations between Mashable, Mayor Bloomberg and NYC Chief Digital Officer Rachel Sterne.

And NYC was not alone in setting aside one day to acknowledge the increasingly crucial role of Gov 2.0, eight other cities also celebrated a Social Media Day last week… but not San Francisco. Read More

recycle

Good news San Francisco! Sorting out all your trash and compost into those green and blue cans is finally good for something other than Mother Earth and your karma.

While San Francisco recently ranked in the top 20 for dirtiest cities in the nation, a new study by Siemens awarded us the title of greenest city in the United States and Canada. Now that’s a distinction we will gladly take. Read More

Jennifer Friedenbach, Executive Director of the Coalition on Homelessness, recently challenged me to a debate on the proposed amendments to Care Not Cash that the Board of Supervisors voted to put on the ballot this November.

In the spirit of Reset San Francisco, where we discuss important issues in the city both big and small, I would be happy to have a conversation with Jennifer on homelessness in our city. There’s no issue as important. Please Read More
