SF Happenings September 15, 2016: Oktoberfest Block Party

Oktoberfest Block Party

What:

As reported by Hoodline:

San Francisco’s favorite historic German restaurant, Schroeder’s, celebrates the 183rd Oktoberfest – the largest beer festival in the world – with a grand Oktoberfest celebration. The celebration kicks off with an over-the-top block party on September 16. Founded in 1893, the establishment has a long history of hosting Oktoberfest with authentic Bavarian flair.

“Schroeder’s Oktoberfest kick off boasts an elaborate celebration closing down all of Front Street beginning at 3 p.m. Hundreds of revelers join for an outdoor Bavarian beer hall featuring benches and communal tables for outdoor dining to set the stage for dancing, brews and traditional German fare alongside Hofbräu activities, including stein holding contests, Polka dancing and the traditional Danish ‘chicken dance.'”

When:

Friday, September 16, 2016 at 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM

The Oktoberfest celebration will continue with indoor parties on the following five Saturdays — including September 17, September 24, October 1, October 8, and October 15 — with doors opening at 5:00 PM and music playing from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM.

SF Happenings September 15, 2016: SFMOMA Modern Cinema

“Modern Cinema” at SFMOMA

What:

Co-presented with the San Francisco Film Society, Modern Cinema is SFMOMA‘s new film series, which will explore the “dynamic interactions between cinema’s past and present.”

As the art museum’s website elaborates:

“Cinema is a thoroughly modern invention—one that has evolved in tandem with and illuminated the complexities of the modern world. This drive to investigate the relationships, trials, and transformations that define our lives continues to motivate contemporary filmmakers—who build on and question the films and techniques of their predecessors. Modern Cinema reveals this ongoing dialogue, and shines a light on the historical continuity and ongoing impact of this most modern of art forms.”

When:

Modern Cinema kicks off on Friday, October 7, 2016, with a screening of Rashomon (Akira Kurosawa) at 6:00 PM, followed by The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (Rainer Werner Fassbinder) at 8:30 PM.

Additional films will be screened throughout the weekend of October 8-9, 2016, as well as on October 13-16, 2016 and October 21-23, 2016.

Check the website to view the full lineup!

Where:

SFMOMA – 151 Third Street, San Francisco, CA 94103
