San Francisco uses an optical scan voting machine to cast their ballots at the polling place. This machine is a paper-based voting system that scans the marks of each voter, and counts the votes electronically when the ballot goes through the machine.

Each San Francisco polling place also has one accessible touch screen voting machine designed to assist voters with disabilities to vote independently and privately.
