In 1957, the state legislature formed the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District – composed of the counties of Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo, Alameda and San Francisco. In 1961, a final engineering plan was submitted to the supervisors of all the counties. San Mateo and Marin counties ended up rejecting the plan, however the rest of the counties approved it and BART went forward. Construction officially began in June 1964.
