The US Army built a fortress at Alcatraz to protect the Bay during the California Gold Rush in 1850, and military prisoners were held there beginning in the late 1850s. However, in 1909 the Army tore down the base and used the military prisoners to build a new prison for US Disciplinary Barracks for the US Army. After it was completed in 1911, the prison became famous as “The Rock.”
