Like many areas of San Francisco, the Inner Richmond district became developed just after the 1906 earthquake and fire as the need for replacement housing grew. Situated north of Golden Gate Park with Ocean Beach on its western border, the Inner Richmond is separated from the Outer Richmond by Park Presidio Boulevard.

Now sometimes referred to as “New Chinatown” due to the high number of Chinese grocery stores and restaurants in the area, the Inner Richmond was initially populated by Irish, Middle Eastern Jews and White Russian immigrants coming to America following World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution. After World War II, an influx of Japanese and Chinese immigrants solidified the Inner Richmond as one of the true multicultural centers of San Francisco.
