Thousands of runners will flood the streets of downtown this weekend as part of the 6th annual San Francisco Giant Race. The event will feature a half-marathon, a 10K, a 5K as well as a kid’s race and family relay in support of Project Open Hand, a nonprofit organization that provides 2,500 meals a day to seniors and the critically ill.

The races will be held on Sunday beginning around 7 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. Prizes for the event include jerseys, medals and a special edition Hunter Pence bobblehead.

Major Street Closures to Cause Traffic Delays

Major thoroughfares like Embarcadero, Van Ness Avenue, Second Street, and King Street will be closed for the race. Event organizers have also said that certain San Francisco Municipal Railway lines will be affected, so prepare for major detours and traffic delays throughout the weekend.

All races will end inside AT&T Park, so anyone who wants to cheer and support those running in the races can do so from inside the park stands.

Giant Race to Raise $400,000 for Charity

With almost 20,000 people running in the race, event organizers hope to raise around $400,000 dollars for Project Open Hand.

Similar projects like The Mission’s Navigation Center and the recently awarded Veterans Affairs grant are also working to reform and end homelessness in San Francisco.

Organizations like these are great examples of how San Francisco is actively working to solve important issues though local projects.
