What Is Prop 62?

Prop 62 would repeal the death penalty in the state of California and replace it with life in prison with no possibility of parole.

The proposition would also increase the percentage of life inmates’ wages that can be applied to victim restitution.

Who Supports Prop 62?

Key supporters of Prop 62 include: former President Jimmy Carter, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, the California Democratic Party, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Supporters argue that the proposition would eliminate the risk of executing an innocent person and provide inmates the opportunity to work and pay restitution to victims’ or their families.

Proponents also contend that Prop 62 would save taxpayers money by replacing a costly, inefficient system.

Who Opposes Prop 62?

Key opponents of Prop 62 include: the California District Attorneys Association and a long list of elected officials (including former Governors Pete Wilson and George Deukmejian), district attorneys, sheriffs, law enforcement associations, and victims’ rights groups.

Opponents argue that the proposition would protect the state’s worst criminals and reduce the protection of victims’ rights.

Opponents also contend that Prop 62 would actually cost taxpayers millions of dollars.
