Fewer Cops on the Beat in San Francisco
The Chronicle today reported that because of budget cuts the SFPD is expected to lose police officers next year. Interim Chief Jeff Godown said, "I can't say that the crime rate will rise because we lose officers ... but all creative ideas will be on the table." Its nice to hear that leadership is willing to accept the fact that everyone has to take a hit given the dire situation facing the city budget. But the idea of closing police stations and eliminating community policing foot beats (which were mentioned as possibilities) could be understandably worrisome to people. It would be nice if options for reductions within the SFPD were made public so that we the people would have a chance to at least weigh in on the priorities we see for public safety.
