New Biking Speed Limit on San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge
In order to reduce bike and pedestrian accidents, which totaled 164 in the last 10 years, and improve tourist experience, the Golden Gate Bridge District is recommending a 10 mph speed limit for cyclists. Violation will entail a $100 fine. This new restriction will take effect by the end of summer.
Recreational bicyclists are complaining that 10 mph is too slow and enforcing such speed limit is impossible, especially in circumstances when outside conditions such as traveling with a tailwind will affect judgment. The new speed limit will require adjustment for most bicyclists, especially since the average speed on the Golden Gate Bridge ranges from 13 to 17 mph.
Is the new 10 mph biking speed limit a good idea?
