Who was the first African American mayor of San Francisco?

Willie L. Brown, Jr. was San Francisco’s first African American Mayor. He was elected in 1995 and served until 2004. Before becoming San Francisco’s mayor, he had worked for 30 years in the California State Assembly and was the Speaker of the Assembly for 14 years.
