Herb Caen was a columnist who wrote for the San Francisco Chronicle from the 1930s until he passed away in the late 1990s. He coined the term Baghdad by the Bay to refer to San Francisco and published a collection of essays of the same title. He also coined the term “beatnik” in a column in 1958 as well as making the word “hippie” popular during the 1967 Summer of Love. He is one of the most beloved and popular columnists in San Francisco history.
