Can I use my Clipper Card to pay for a friend?

No, Clipper Cards are intended for individual use only. In fact, Clipper Cards are programmed to not allow you to touch your card to a sensor more that once in a ten-minute window. This protects you from accidentally double charging yourself for a single ride.

What happens if I run out of money on my Clipper Card?

The answer to this question has been the source of much controversy. Read about the Clipper Card scams.

How do I report a Clipper Card that is not working?

If your Clipper Card is not working it may be damaged, defective or blocked because of a reported fraudulent usage claim.

If you think your card is malfunctioning, you need to return the card to the Clipper Customer Service Center for inspection. If it is found to be defective through no fault of your own, and it is less than one year old, Clipper will replace the card and restore your balance to a new card.

How do I buy a Clipper Card?

There are a few ways to buy your Clipper Card. One way is to go online. You can access the Clipper website through the SFMTA.com website, or by going directly to the Clipper website. You can also order your Clipper Card over the phone at (877) 878 – 8883.

Do I have to register my Clipper Card if I ordered it online?

No. If you ordered your Clipper Card online, it is already registered with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. However, if you purchased your card in person, you should register your card to protect your card and balance in case your Clipper Card is lost or stolen. To learn how, read our review on the Clipper Card online registration process or call (877) 878 - 8883.

How do I use my new Clipper Card?

Whenever you are using participating San Francisco public transit, you will need to ‘tag’ your card on the Clipper Card reader at the entrance of the transportation vehicle, station or fare gates. To correctly tag your card, hold it upright against the sensor and wait for the beep or for the fare gates to open. If this happens, your card was appropriately charged for the fare.

Where are the Clipper Card Customer Centers Located?

While you can add value to your Clipper Card at stations around the city, there are only two Clipper Card Customer Centers. You can purchase a new Clipper Card, add value to an existing card, deal with a damaged or defective card or apply for a discount card at these Clipper Card Customer Centers.

One Customer Center is on the concourse level of the Embarcadero BART/MUNI station and the other location is at the Bay Crossings store in the Ferry Building.
