Golden Gate Bridge Tolls

CJC's picture

The finance committee for the Golden Gate bridge made the decision to replace toll workers with automatic machines. -

This is obviously the most cost effective decision and automization is the dominant trend in all aspects of life from grocery stores to call centers to video rental. While this brings costs down and perhaps makes things easier, there are losers. The process is eliminating jobs at a furious rate. Manufacturing is declining pushing people in to low skilled service work. Now service work is being replaced by machines. What are people going to do to make a living?

Sure there is an ever greater demand for high tech and high skilled work but Bridge toll workers don't turn into computer programmers over night. Either there has to be a massive investment into universal higher education or, we are going to have to get creative to make sure there are jobs to go around.

Where are these going to come?
