The blue bin outside of homes and businesses in San Francisco is for recycling. As part of the mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinance, all San Franciscans are required to dispose of their recyclable waste in their blue trash bin. You can recycle metal, plastic, paper, and glass. Exceptions to this general rule include plastic bags, wrappers and Styrofoam, which cannot be recycled in the blue recycling bins. Food and liquid also do not belong in these bins. For a comprehensive list of acceptable recycling items, visit the SF Environment website.
