94133 North Beach
One of the City’s most popular neighborhoods, North Beach is considered San Francisco’s Little Italy. Featuring many cafes, bars and some of the best restaurants in San Francisco, North Beach was populated by Italians in the late 1800s. Legend has it that when the 1906 earthquake and fire hit the City, the Italian residents saved their homes – and much of the neighborhood – by covering their roofs in blankets soaked in red wine.
North Beach is also the place to be for fans of the Beat generation – with remnants of Kerouac and Ginsberg throughout the neighborhood. Grant Avenue – the oldest street in San Francisco – runs throughout North Beach as does Broadway. Despite its history, North Beach is still a thriving community today.
