The San Francisco Office of Small Business provides a detailed list of resources which you need to start a non-profit organization and get it registered with the city of San Francisco and the Tax Collector’s office. You will first need to obtain a nonprofit corporation number and use it to apply for a Business Registration Certificate. You also have the option of applying for a Business Registration Exemption, which allows you to avoid paying payroll taxes and registration fees. The form and instructions are also available on the San Francisco Office of Small Business website.

The Foundation Center has a free webinar which you can consult in order to learn about forming a nonprofit organization. You can view the video on the Foundation Center website.
