How was San Francisco affected by the Gold Rush?
San Francisco was originally a small town based around a Spanish mission – the Mission San Francisco de Asis. During the Gold Rush, the town population exploded from 200 in 1846 to over 36,000 in 1852 – making San Francisco the largest west coast city at the time.
