The green bin outside of homes and businesses in San Francisco is for composting. As part of the mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinance, all San Franciscans are required to compost biodegradable waste in their green trash bin. You can compost plants, food and soiled paper. A good general rule of thumb is that if it was once alive, it can probably be composted.  Check with the SF Environment website to find a comprehensive list of items that are perfect for the compost bin.
