The black bin outside of San Francisco homes and businesses is for trash intended for a landfill. As part of the mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinance, all San Franciscans are required to dispose of landfill trash in the black bin. Items which are intended for the landfill include ceramic dishware, clothing and linens, cigarette buds, diapers, dental floss, foil, plastic bags, any paper with foil or plastic lining, Styrofoam, rubber bands, sponges, chip bags, wood, small pieces of food, pens and pencils.

You can find a comprehensive list of items that belong in the trash bin on the SF Environment website.
