Sourdough was the most common kind of bread sold during the California Gold Rush, and continues to be popular today. San Francisco sourdough bread is said to be the most famous in the US, and has been produced here for over 150 years. Lactobacillus Sanfranciscensis is a yeast in sourdough bread and gets its name from the city it was discovered in – San Francisco.
