Domingo Ghirardelli was an Italian immigrant who moved to San Francisco in hopes of striking it rich during the California Gold Rush. Instead he struck out – failing to find gold and losing his businesses in the 1851 fire. Not one to give up, he founded the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. He found success and took his business to the San Francisco waterfront – or today’s Ghirardelli Square. Ghirardelli Chocolate Company celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2002.
